Hi All I suffered a flare up last Wednesday. The top of my right arm became very painful during the day. By the evening it was awful I took paracetomol but it didn't make any difference. By 4.30am on Thursday morning I was in so much pain my husband took me to A&E. I was put on a drip with liquid paracetomol but that didn't help so I had liquid morphine which kicked in quickly and did help ease the pain. I have never in my life suffered from such pain and my arm still feels tender Tomorow I have an appointment at the hospital so I will discuss it with the consultant. It's been a year since I was diagnosed and this is the first time I have suffered such pain. I take sulfasalazine and hydroxchlorquine. Is it normal for flare ups to come completely out the blue? Take care everyone Debs xx

hello Debs
So you have been in so much pain and ended up in Hospital.
I believe that you can get a sudden flare, however with regard the medicines you are taking I cannot specifically answer.
Hope you go ok at the Spec tomorrow. Good luck

O Debs how miserable
I had my first big attack from the RA in my shoulder/ arm- I really thought I had dislocated it.
I do think it can help to keep a diary and use the traffic light system and then you can spot when the flair ups are more likely to come.
They do come out of the blue sometimes but normally there is a heap of stress or lots of activity in a short time around the time of the flair. When I started the RA it was all over the place.
Didnt seem any rhyme nor reason the places it would attack.
Sending a (very gentle) hug.

I had suffered from fatigue and minor migrating joint pains in ankles, hands, toes and elbows for about 2 years and made numerous visits to the GP. Test repeatedly came back 'negative' and I did not get a referral so was made to feel it was all in my head. Why my GP didn't seem to know that about 1/3 of people with RA test negative for rheumatoid factor I really cannot fathom. Surely they are trained to know this! However in April of this year I became virtually paralysed by pain and locked joints (nearly all of my joints) almost overnight (as well as other systemic symptoms) and could barely move for 4 weeks whilst waiting for a 'rapid access' rheumatologist appointment. So yes flares can come out of the blue.
I finally have the diagnosis that has enabled me to have disease modifying treatment. I really sympathise with your pain. It can be horrendous! I honestly felt like I was trying to move fractured bones when I woke up in the mornings during my sever flare. I now call it 'the mother flare'. I do hope things settle down for you and send my best wishes and very soft hugs to you.
Naomi.

Oh dear I'm sorry you folks have been suffering so much. I haven't experienced anything like that so far (touch wood) so I can't offer any advice I'm afraid. YES I'VE CHANGED, PAIN DOES THAT TO PEOPLE.

Hi Debs, the very same thing happened to me 2 years ago I woke up with a sore arm which got progressively worse as the day went on. I took loads of painkillers but the pain got so bad I had to call out a duty doctor. He prescribed diazapan which was the oly thing I could take having taken the full whack of painkillers during the day. This happened just before I was dx with RA.
Really hope you get some relief soon.

Hi Thank you all for replying. I have been to see the consultant at the hospital this morning and I am to stop taking the sulfasalazine because of my sore mouth and if my mouth improves I am to start taking the sulfasalazine again also if I have another flare up I am to have a steriod injection. Hopefully things will settle down otherwise methotrexate was mentioned. Take care Debs xxx

Hi Debs,
I can empathise with you. I think the shoulder and ribs are the WORST pain. It feels like I have a heavy weight pulling my arm out of it's socket. i had a flare in my shoulder last week, it's still tender.
Sorry you have experienced this awful pain Debs.
Hope it feels better very soon.

Hi Debs
Really hope things are starting to settle down now and the pain is easier. I also know how awful it is to have a mouth full of ulcers and the like. Have you been given anything to take to help with this?
Take care

Hi All I'm feeling really low today. I'm rinsing with salt water to help ease the pain in my mouth. I have tried different tablets and gels but nothing seems to work. As I've been taken off the sulfasalazine hopefully it will start to ease as the consultant thinks it could well be the sulfasalazine that is causing the problem and I think it probably is as well. I'm feeling very tired and achey. Going to Wales tomorrow with hubby and friends for the weekend I certainly won't be charging about!!!!!!!! going to take it easy, enjoy the sea air and views and hopefully go up snowdon by train and enjoy the view (if its not cloudy)!!!!!! Thank you all for your support at least the sun is shining!! Take care Debs xxx

Hi Debs,
Have you tried Oraldene mouthwash? I find it quite soothing for mouth ulcers. Have a nice relaxing weekend,

Hi All I'm back from having a spent a lovely long weekend in Wales with the sun shining nearly all the time!!!! It has been exactly a week since I have stopped taking the sulfasalazine tablets and my mouht is beginning to feel so much better so I can only assume that it was the tablets that were causing the problems. I am supposed to start taking them again after two weeks but only take 4 instead of 6 tablets a day. Hopefully my sore mouth won't return I shall have to wait and see!!!!!! Take cae everyone Debs xxxx
